--> zur deutschen Version Spitzbergen Report Nr.1August 20th 2001News from NielsSafety courseShore leave on the far side of Adventfjorden opposite of Longyearbyen. Abandonned ancient mining settlement and straying reindeers (near the picture). Despite the distance to real civilization a lot of rubbish from the sea is covering the ground. Swimming in the idyllic harbour of Longyearbyen The survival suits are absolutely water proof (most of them at least) and very warm. Having a bath in the 2 degree cold water is therefore very cosy. My general impression of Svalbards' nature so far: deserted, void, awes-inspiring and besides the overwhelming beauty containing a very clear message: "Man, this land is none of your business." Thus, ideal circumstances for my mission. Reindeers are very fat and short-legged. An italian fellow proposed their lack of reason to flee from something as explanation. Polar bears only feed on seals (and from time to time a tasty, unweaponed human being) and the coldness is always faster than they are. Longyearbyen - downtown seen from the north.By virtue of this picture you can almost call yourself a Longyearbyen connoisseur: a pronounced New York-Insider won't know a bigger part of that city. Very beautiful in the center of the photo: Longyearbreen, the glacier behind the student hostels The mountain by the horizon is picturesquely named Sarkophagen.
