zur deutschen Version Spitzbergen Report No. 3September 26th 2001![]() Ny esund: The neighbouring glacier Kongsbreen is active an spitting a lot of so-called growlers. ![]() Spitsbergen from a height of 2.5 km. 18,000 years ago Oberbayern looked like this. I was very impressed with the indescribable blue ponds that you sometimes can glimpse on the glaciers. ![]() Ny esund-downtown : The northernmost post office in the world. The whole village is so tiny that it underbids all imagination. All in all only about 100 scientists and infra-structure servants live here. The german polar station is situated 100 metres from there in the direction of my sight. ![]() Ny esund : From the mountain over Ny esund to the north looking on a calving glacier. ![]() The scouts' nods even accompany me on the meteorological fieldwork. ![]() Longyearbyen from the air. ![]() Nybyen is eaten up by a fog dragon. ![]() The fog and the day alike have progressed. ![]() A reindeer enjoys itself in Nybyen and is literally standing under my window. ![]() Shooting practice. ![]() The view from the backside of my house to the south. ![]() Brakke 4, my beloved home ... ![]() The tiring way to Nybyen. It is as long as it looks like, only much steeper. For the sake of completeness I should add that a proper blizzard brought some real snow. Thus, the road has become life-threateningly slippery. In addition you nearly always have to face an evil katabatic wind on the way up. The snowdrift makes this route a real challenge then. Snow doesn't fall from aloft here, but sideways. And it only accumulates in the windshade. On unprotected surfaces (almost everywhere), it is only one centimeter. Instead every tiny obstacle on the floor is equipped with a fancy, lee-sided taillet of snow. Back to overview Questions ? updated on September 7th 2002 |
